Ninety-Sixth Day of School

Today we learn about 3 sets of simple machines. Ask us some questions. Simple machines help us accomplish work. For discussion:

  • What types of simple machines do you know? (wheel and axle, lever and fulcrum, inclined plane)
  • Where might you see a simple machine?
  • How would you use a simple machine to help you do work?
We are bringing home our world maps today to study for the test. The test is tentatively scheduled for Friday, February 8th (It might say 9th on the map). If anyone feels it would be better to have more time to study for this test, simply respond to this post. We aren't necessarily in any rush to take this test if more time is needed.

We will probably have Topic 13 Math test on Friday.

Reminder: Reading logs are due Thursday. New reading logs will go out on Monday. They will be in a slightly different format to accommodate a county reading contest.

  1. More time to study for the test would be great -perhaps a test on the following Monday would give us more time. Also, for the personal opinion essay, is there any specific way you would suggest to practice for that? Is this the writing assignment about a favorite cartoon character? Should students compare their favorite to another character, or should they simply explain the reasons they like that particular character? Thanks!

  2. Thank you for your comments and questions. We can certainly postpone till the following Monday. So we will target the 7th or the closest day with good attendance. As for the opinion paper, we experimented with writing actual opinions. Some students had no problem with this while others really struggled. The actual test does not ask for the students to write a real opinion. Writing about a favorite cartoon character was a practice for the test. Basically if your child can specify (introduce) a favorite and describe and tell why that is a favorite and conclude then they should be okay for the test. They will not need to compare. It would be good to discuss with them favorites while they enumerate reasons for their preference using descriptive language. I hope this explanation is clear. Let me know if you need more.
